Light Sensitization (Phototoxicity)

After primary irritation, one of the most common tests of skin care ingredients is for light sensitization. A substance may not irritate alone, but in the presence of light may cause irritation in the form of redness, or more severe reactions. The retinoids (all-trans-retinoic acid, or Accutane), and retinol are known to cause light sensitivity in this manner, among many other ingredients.

Description of Study and Results
Oxofulleram (0.3%) in grape seed oil (Combray) was applied by occluded (covered) patch and left in place for 24 hours to 25 human subjects. A UV-A dose of 10 J/cm^2 and UV-B dose of 0.5 MED (minimal erythema dose) was applied, the site was then covered by a light impervious barrier which was left for 24 hours. A trained dermatologist then monitored the exposed site, and subsequently at 48 h and 72 hours, as well as a follow-up 3 days after the last observation. No adverse reactions were observed in any of the subjects.
